Calligraphers everywhere can learn so much from studying the art of engrossing. Flourishing in the US from the late 1800s through mid 1900s, this very impressive art form uses not only a variety of lettering hands, but also techniques that have all but been forgotten. Used for certificates, resolutions and memorials, engrossing encompasses border techniques, photo inclusion, title flourishing, watercolor techniques for title names, acanthus leaves, gilding, shading and so much more. These techniques can be just as useful today. Learning a few small decorative techniques can add so much to a lettering project today. I will be showing images from the Healey Collection, the collection of Zaner Bloser originals that shows the Penman’s Journal covers and artwork accumulated over the years and now housed at The University of Scranton Weinberg Memorial Library. From the days of the Healey Collection through today, I will be talking about the year long master class in the art of engrossing that was held in 2008-2009 for the first time in over 50 years. The scope of work is truly amazing and inspiring.

Artist Barbara Mauriello learned traditional techniques of bookbinding the old-fashioned way: through an apprenticeship. Having trained in both book conservation and bookbinding as an artist’s tool, she now specializes in the production of limited edition artists’ books, in collaboration with visual artists, poets, printers, printmakers, and papermakers. Barbara loves boxes, and has written a book about them (“Making Memory Boxes,” Rockport Publishers, 2000).

Get inspired for Valentine’s Day with
Passion, Poetry and Calligraphy
A slideshow and talk by Sherrie Lovler about her calligraphic art from Two As One, the book she co-authored with architect Anthony Lawlor.

2:00 pm
School of Visual Arts (SVA) Annex
214 East 21st Street, Manhattan
(between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)

The theme is love. The words are romantic poetry between Sherrie and Anthony describing the first two months of their relationship. The question is, ”How can one capture the freshness of new love and spontaneous poems visually?” The answer is in the 12 calligraphic paintings of Two As One.

In this slide-lecture Sherrie will trace her creative process from first draft or idea to fruition. Some thoughts to be addressed are: how to keep the freshness of a first draft alive; how to keep perfectionism from deadening a piece; how to deal with feeling stuck; how to keep the doors open to new inspiration?

Slides will show initial drafts, development of the work, the failures, problems surmounted, and changes in direction that often occurred. The talk continues with the process of turning the art, poems and stories into a self-published book. To take a peek inside the book, click here: http://www.inkmonkey.com/flipbook/

Bio:
This is a homecoming for Sherrie who grew up in the Bronx and learned calligraphy there in high school. Her passion for this art has never left her side as she meandered her way across the country, now living in California. From early studies with Hermann Zapf to more advanced work with Dick Beasley, Sherrie has made calligraphy her career. She has been teaching for over 30 years, including several International Calligraphy Conferences, and this summer at Ghost Ranch. Her images and writings have been published in The Art & Craft of Hand Lettering, Letter Arts Review Annuals, Bound and Lettered and many other books and journals. Her work has been seen in both juried and group shows and most recently in a solo exhibition featuring 34 of her paintings and poems. Her newest art and poetry can be seen at www.natureartandpoetry.com and her prints are available at www.inkmonkey.com.

The Society of Scribes is offering a two-hour “tasting” lecture on the art of photopolymer letterpress geared toward calligraphers who would like to expand their repertoire. Letterpress is currently in vogue for wedding and social stationery, but this isn’t the entire story. Holiday cards, books, and gifts are just a few possible applications with letterpress for calligraphers. A brief review of foil stamping will also be included in this lecture.

So warm up with some hot cocoa this January, spend a few hours with us and learn if this printing technique is for you. The Center for Book Arts lecturer, Roni Gross, will take you through the process with an actual calligraphy project using one of the Center’s presses. Papers, inks, techniques, and an idea of costs will be covered as well as suggestions for beginner classes.
