Founded in 1974, and based in New York City, the SoS is a non-profit educational organization which promotes the study, teaching and practice of calligraphy and related disciplines.

SoS fosters the appreciation, understanding and acceptance of calligraphy as a fine art. It also encourages fellowship and the exchange of ideas through its speakers, programs, workshops, exhibits and publications.

Funded by membership dues and contributions which are tax deductible, membership runs from January 1.

Join us  and/or enroll in our classes or workshops!   Beginners are welcome.

Letters from New York 5 is now available.

Featuring 19th century Master Penman Henry Ellsworth, an exploration of the line by Cynthia Dantzic, and a photo essay of books in stone and bronze, this 80-page book is full of ideas that will inspire the modern scribe.

Calligraphy is the art of beautiful writing and for 30 years the Society of Scribes has offered a wide range of classes and workshops teaching many different styles of writing -- with broad-edged and pointed pens, brushes and markers. We are fortunate in being able to attract and bring leading calligraphers from all over the world to offer weekend workshops; we also are blessed with local talent to inspire and teach beginning and intermediate students. If you want to learn these hands or strengthen your abilities, consider taking a class!

Weekend Classes and Workshops.   SoS offers classes for beginners wishing to learn the fundamentals of broad pen or pointed pen. A wide variety of workshops are offered to build on those basic pen skills, learn new techniques or to expand your repertoire of calligraphy-related skills.

We have 2 ‘seasons’---Fall, from September through December and Winter-Spring, from February through late May or early June. We do not offer classes during the summer months.

For details, see Workshops and Lectures.
