Online Workshop

Madarasz Script with Schin Loong

Limited to 25 students

Add some pizzazs and razsmatasz to your pointed-pen palette by channeling the skilled hand of Golden Age maszter penman Louis Madarasz, as taught by Schin Loong of OpenInkStand Art & Calligraphy, from Lasz Vegasz!

In this class we will study the exciting shaded script of master penman Louis Madarasz (1859–1910). A knowledge of pointed pen script is required, and in this class we will learn to add extra pizzazz and heavy shades to our work. This shaded script (Madarasz calls it “insurance policy writing,” but we know it as Madarasz script) is very visible, bold, and will complement any other pointed pen scripts you have learned. I’m excited to meet and share with you and together we’ll study and pay homage to this legendary penman and his unforgettable style!

An online forum will be provided for homework submission and critique between classes.

The livestream sessions will be recorded and made available for review until February 27, 2021.

This class is for intermediate skill levels and assumes that the student has familiarity with another formal pointed-pen script.

Several demonstrations of Schin’s Madarasz style can be found on her YouTube channel

MATERIALS LIST

  • Flexible and snappy pointed nibs. I recommend any of these: Leonardt Principal, Gillott 303, Hunt 101. I do not recommend stiff nibs such as Zebra G, Nikko G. These stiff nibs are not able to provide the snappy Madarasz strokes we are looking for. Personally I will be using Leonardt Principals.

  • Black sumi ink, diluted with about 30% water in the inkwell. A good-sized inkwell works best. I do not recommend tiny dinky dips. We’re really gonna dip and load up the nib. Gonna use a lot of ink in this class!!

  • Large water container and paper towels. A selection of straight and oblique penholders with metal flange (I do not recommend the black plastic Speedball penholder). A pair of pliers if you need to adjust the penholder.

  • Paper pad. I recommend a Rhodia blank pad but if you have your own paper, make sure it’s good quality paper that will not bleed. 8.5 x 11 inches or bigger. We’re gonna go through a lot of paper. Fancy paper or cards for your final projects. Some quotes or words that you want to write.

  • Pencil, ruler and eraser. Some old newspapers or loose sheets to place under your writing sheet (or blotter, etc).

An open mind! :) Feel free to look through Madarasz’s work as well:
