This painting workshop provides a unique opportunity to explore modern techniques for creating border designs, inspired by historical medieval illuminated manuscripts. Tailored for beginners, participants will receive hands-on instruction in the artistic principles and methods behind these exquisite works.

Throughout the workshop, you will learn to paint and design intricate border decorations, botanical illustrations, and ornamental patterns, drawing inspiration from the manuscripts housed in The New York Public Library's Rare Books and Manuscripts archive. No prior artistic experience is necessary, just a passion for history and a desire to create!

Materials List

Paper:

  • 1 full pad of high-quality, hot-pressed watercolor paper, 9 x 12 inches, at least 300 gsm | Recommended brands: Fabriano, Arches, Saunders Waterford

Pens:

  • A dip pen (straight or oblique) with a stiff pointed nib, such as Nikko G or any nib suitable for drawing

  • Sakura Pigma Micron in black (size 005)

  • Colored pencils (include red, blue, yellow, green)

  • Mechanical pencil

Brushes:

  • Watercolor pointed round brushes with a fine tip for intricate painting (sizes 0, 1, 2) | Recommended brands: Princeton Series 7050 Brush, Raphael Synthetic Kolinsky Watercolor Brush Series 8348

Ink:

  • Black waterproof calligraphy ink for outlining | Recommended brands: Speedball Super Black India Ink

  • Gold metallic ink for painting | Recommended brands: Coliro Arabic Gold, Creative Kinds

Paint:

Cancellation policy: Cancellations are allowed at any time, however refunds will only be issued if there is a waitlisted student who will fill your place.
Sickness: If you are registered and need to miss one class due to sickness (we’d rather you stay home and rest!), you are welcome to sit in a future session of the same workshop as we will repeat these introductory classes.
