Uncial and Carolingian Calligraphy with Eleanor Winters - Fall 2026

This is a rare opportunity to learn two of the most beautiful styles of calligraphy in an intensive four-session program*.  Uncial and Carolingian are historical scripts dating back more than 1000 years.  Uncial was the prevalent European bookhand in the 4th through 9th century, used widely in manuscripts.  Carolingian, whose name derives from the Emperor Charlemagne, was the "official" script during the 9th century, a writing style that influenced calligraphy for hundreds of years, in fact the forerunner of Italic.

In this class we will learn the basics of these two elegant scripts, including rules of spacing, so that we can use them alongside our other calligraphic hands. 

This class is recommended for students with some familiarity with broad-edged pen calligraphy.

*Please note:  For students who prefer to focus on one or the other script, we offer the option of taking two out of the four sessions, either two weeks of Uncial or two weeks of Carolingian. Please email us to let us know!

• Brause 3mm and 4mm nibs (Left-handed students please use left-handed Brause nibs. You can order from John Neal; be sure to allow time for delivery)

• Black, non-waterproof ink, such as Higgins Eternal, Quink, Waterman

• Smooth practice paper, such as Canson Pro-Layout Marker, Bienfang Graphics, or similar

• Water container & cloth or paper towels

• Pencil, eraser

• Ruler
